Florida Holocaust Museum Hosts UN Day Event

Cindy Minetti, JFS Director and Harvey Hertz

Gulf Coast’s Florida Center for Survivors of Torture and the Florida Holocaust Museum co-hosted the Tampa Bay premiere of ” Beneath the Blindfold” a documentary about torture survivors earlier this summer.  The event was held in commemoration of United Nations Day in Support of Victims of Torture held annually around the world to honor those who died at the hands of their torturers and celebrate the lives of survivors.  “Partnering with the Florida Holocaust Museum was a great experience,” said Ann Marie Winter, Administrator Programs at Gulf Coast. “The Museum is dedicated to teaching the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to prevent future genocides, which aligns closely with the Florida Center’s own mission.”  A panel discussion followed the film with Gulf Coast staff from its Harvey Hertz Jewish Family Services department, Florida Center for Survivors of Torture, John Debrule, Managing Partner at Gulf Coast Legal Services, Marie Silverman –a Holocaust survivor and member of Gulf Coast’s Holocaust Advisory Board and two survivors of torture.  More than 100 people attended the event with desserts provided by Jo-El’s, Publix and Frida’s Bakery.
