With offices in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, the Refugee Youth and Family Program works with “at-risk” youth enrolled in K-12 ages 5-20 who are refugees, asylees, or Cuban/Haitian Entrants in the United States less than 5 years. The program seeks to improve school success, reduce dropout risk factors, help youth successfully transition from school to the workplace, and improve the acculturation process and preservation of the refugee family. Special emphasis is placed on families/youth who are preliterate or illiterate, or who have significant gaps in their education.
Types of Services include:
- Psychosocial screening and academic assessment
- Direct bilingual/bi-cultural school liaison and advocacy to insure students are appropriately placed and receive needed academic and ESOL services
- Tutoring and homework assistance
- Promoting involvement in after school and summer programs
- Career exploration and vocational assistance for teens
- Fun and educational acculturation activities
- Parenting education and resources
- Individual and group counseling (non-clinical)
- Family violence prevention
- Case management linkage and referrals to community services
