FACES project: Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program

The Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program (NCEP) helps unemployed or underemployed noncustodial parents find and maintain employment. The program aims at having the noncustodial parent make child support payments on a timely basis and at maintaining his or her employment.

Thomas

Making it work, means making it to work.

The degradation and frustration that comes from being incapable of giving your child everything he could ever want, or at the very least giving him enough to be happy, is overwhelming. The Non-Custodial Parent Employment Program (NCEP) helps mothers and fathers, who do not have custody of their children, find steady jobs to pay for child support and, ultimately, contribute to their children’s well-being.

Thomas’ self-esteem was low. A dark cloud hung over every day, with missed payments of child support accumulating, growing bigger and bigger. The thought that plagued him was the possibility of incarceration, and worse, a crippled relationship with his son. Thomas felt out of options; he couldn’t find employment, he didn’t have transportation, and he felt at odds against the world. He felt alone. Thomas needed to do something, and fast, or else his fate would be sealed.

The NCEP staff transformed Thomas and gave him a completely new attitude. With their resources and encouragement, they helped Thomas find work. They helped with job searches, career planning, résumé writing, vocational training, and transportation. In just a month, Thomas found a job he was perfectly suited for; working as a cook. He has since become a supervisor of the entire kitchen.

Thomas’ work ethic brought him promotions and a steady income. He never misses a child support payment and has built a better relationship with his son’s mother. Most importantly, Thomas and his son are closer than ever. The bond between the two is strong and Thomas couldn’t be more proud of his son. NCEP has given Thomas the means and the motivation to provide for his child.
